News Mandate

The news mandate is to act as a guide for all further proceedings with news at CFRC. Agreeing on fundamental concepts and objectives for the way we view and provide news serves many purposes.
This mandate will allow CFRC to explicitly address what it means to provide alternative news. As we continue to develop our news department, the mandate will provide grounds for the evaluation of future ideas and initiatives. The mandate will be periodically revisited to assess the existing elements of news programming.

(i) Seek to present the audience with a multitude of perspectives;
(ii) Focus content on local issues, including underreported issues;
(iii) Actively oppose all forms of discrimination and encourage inclusive space both internally amongst members of the news collective, and externally in all aspects of our reporting, including: interviewing, researching, writing and reading;
(iv) Promote lasting dialogues and understanding among individuals of different communities;
(v) Make the content and presentation of our broadcast accessible to the widest audience possible;
(vi) Conduct our coverage in a way that allows community members to spread their own messages, and encourage, reach out and provide skills to communities to be the media;
(vii) Provide news that avoids the sensationalism and sound bites often associated with commercial and public radio, and practice reporting that gives subjects the opportunity to articulate their messages, while also putting news stories in a broader context that includes social justice and historical considerations.”
(viii) Recognize the power of the media as a tool for education, and inspire listeners to reflect upon injustice and oppression.
